The Seven Hermetic Principles-The Principle of Gender

The seventh and final Hermetic Principle (according to the Kybalion), may just be one of the most important and most misunderstood of the principles.  Most associate gender with physical sex characteristics.  This however is only a small part of the true meaning of gender.  The word gender derives from the Greek “gen” which means to produce, as in genesis.  Sex is the physical manifestation of gender that is separated into male and female.  When the Hermetic masters referred to gender, they were referring to the generating principle, not male or female sex.  What is important to note at this point is that all things contain both the female and the male energies within them.  Everyone and everything contain characteristics that are akin to both male and female.  Like all other Hermetic Principles, this is true of the physical and super-physical realm and on the mental plane as well.

In the superphysical realm of electricity, the principle manifests as positive and negative polarity. The masculine aspect manifests as the positive polarity, or charge and the feminine manifests as the negative polarity, or charge.  The Kybalion goes to great lengths to eschew the idea that positive and negative have anything to do with our normal concept of those characteristics.  More correctly, it is noted that positive polarity should be referred to as masculine energy and that negative polarity should be referred to as feminine energy.  With this in mind, it explains the law of attraction between the male and female energies within the electrical field. The same can be said of magnetism as well. It is by using these energies together that the end result is created, just as it is on our physical realm with new-life conception.

The masculine and feminine are present upon the physical plane within each being, and manifest as the separate sexes.  On the mental realm, the principle manifests itself through the hemispheres of the brain and through the characteristics of our thoughts and behaviors. The left side of the brain is said to govern the aspects of reason, logic, and analytical thought.  The right brain governs the creative, intuitive, and imaginative aspects our thoughts.  The left side is said to be the male aspect and the right, the female.  We can see these aspects manifested in our gender roles.  Men are said to be more drawn to logic, whereas women are said to be more intuitive.  Of course, we all have aspects of both and neither is more important than the other.  Both are equally important to our complete mental well-being.  The Kybalion goes into great detail regarding the concept of psychic influence and states that people who have mental influence over others, use the power of the male or female to attract the male or female attention of the person that they are trying to influence, just like female electrical charge attracts the male electrical charge.

In a previous blog (Removal of the Divine Feminine), I have discussed the suppression of the Divine Feminine in our culture and what it has done to cast our society out of balance.  This obsession with the left-brain consciousness is what has lead us down the path of ruin that we are currently on.  We can see this at work, even in our educational system, where the importance has been placed on mathematics and science, and has been take off of music and art.  Our education system likes to elude us by telling us that art and music aren’t important because you can’t make a living off of them.  The fact of the matter is that the greatest minds of our time have had a great balance of the masculine and feminine.  Take Einstein for example.  If he had not had a great imagination, many of his greatest discoveries would not have been made.  To quote Einstein regarding this matter, he said: ”

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”

-Albert Einstein

Someone who most consider to be one of the greatest minds of our time, understood the importance of the brain hemispheres working together.  Without being able to think outside of the box, great breakthroughs are not possible.

This same balance of the masculine and feminine is needed for our consciousness as well. We must act with equal adherence to our intuitive and our rationale in life.  We must also act with empathy and care (feminine) and right action (masculine) in our day to day lives. It is when we start to work with and apply these laws in our everyday lives that they become less abstract and more personalized and empowering.  The Law of Gender gives us a new understanding of the way things in the physical and non-physical world work and the way our thoughts and actions interact with one another.

The Hermetic Principles have been passed down through the ages so that those who have the ability to comprehend them may see the true nature of reality.  They are a tool for liberation from the misinformation we have received and a light so that we may see through the darkness of materialism.  Each day, modern science is getting closer and closer to accepting many of these concepts as the truth and is realizing that our old belief system is flawed and  incorrect.  Those who worship the material world of money and possessions are being deceived by their senses that are limited to our finite minds.  It is up to us to explore the true nature of our reality which is immaterial, infinite and forever changing, moving, vibrating, attracting and repelling, constantly fluctuating in this great and infinite universal tide.

The Seven Hermetic Principles-The Principle of Cause and Effect

Every cause has its effect, every effect has its cause. So is the law.

This law states that everything happens because of a cause and that every cause has its effect on something.  This is one of the Hermetic Principles that aligns perfectly with modern science.  Physics states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.  Though science simply equates this with the physical realm, the Hermetic teachings show that it is true of the metaphysical realm as well.

There is nothing that escapes cause.  There simply is no chance or coincidence.  If you look deeply at the root of any happening, you will see that there was a cause for why it turned out the way it did.  An example would be the fall of dice.  It seems at first like the result is random, but if you look at the action more closely, you will see that there is nothing random about it.  Depending on the amount of force used in the toss of the dice and the surface they are landing on will determine the outcome. You would also have to factor in the condition of the dice.  Are they smooth and new, or marred by use.  It is not a random result.

In the non-physical realm, we can look at the souls journey after death.  According to Max Heindel in “The Rosicrucian Mysteries” the soul after death goes through a series of events that are determined by the breath record which is stored by the heart.  This record determines if the soul needs to learn more by staying close to the physical realm (in Purgatory) or can go ahead and ascend further into the after life.  If the record indicates that the individual lived decadently, the soul must go through the process of learning the error of living in this manner and must suffer to some degree before being allowed to move out of Purgatory and to the next level of the afterlife.  This would indicate there is an effect in the afterlife that is borne in the life of an individual.  Therefore, the effect dwells in the non-physical or spiritual realm.

If we can master an understanding of this principle we can work with it and become causes rather than effects. We can work with the natural process of cause and effect and avoid be carried away by the current of effect as if it were out of our hands.

The Seven Hermetic Principles-The Principle of Polarity

Everything is dual. Everything has two poles.  This principle states that everything that we experience is polarized. Everything has a positive and a negative pole. This is true of the physical as well as metaphysical world. These poles are separated only by varying degrees of vibration.  Some examples would be things like hot and cold, dull and sharp, love and hate.

Though these things may seem to oppose one another, if we take a closer look, we will see that they are intrinsically linked and only separated by degrees. Hot and cold are only separated by varying degrees of vibration. They are both just degrees of the same thing. There is no absolute hot or absolute cold. There are only varying degrees of heat. Love and hate follows the principle as well. Though difficult to see at first, love and hate are only separated by degrees. Like and dislike bridge the gaps. As we explore this idea, we will see that there are no absolutes.  There are always varying degrees that prevent an absolute of anything.

It is possible to change the polarity of a physical object by changing it’s vibration or by working it toward it’s negative or positive pole.  This is possible in the mental realms as well, and this is where real important change can occur. It’s in the actual mental utilization of polarizing on the positive end of a pole that mental transmutation may occur.  By polarizing ones thoughts on the positive pole, it is possible for the individual to overcome negative situations and mental states that would normally overtake them and leave them stuck in a negative place.  By polarizing to the positive pole on the mental plane, an individual can overcome certain destructive tendencies of human emotion and keep their life in balance.  This is the most powerful tool of the self-master, a tool for keeping those destructive (animalistic) emotions in check and not letting them rule over ones self.  It is these emotions that cause the individual to fall into destructive tendencies like anger, hatred, jealousy, and self-absorption.

It is the overcoming of these lower emotions that allows the spiritual seeker to advance on the path of self-mastery and to raise their vibration so that they may eventually overcome the material realm and ascend to higher planes of manifestation.

The Seven Hermetic Priciples-The Priciple of Vibration

Vibrations all around. The Priciple of Vibration states that everything we see is made up of vibrating energy. Matter, spirit, light, heat, mental states, etc. all of these are merely functions of vibrational energy.

Science is rapidly coming to the same conclusion. Vibration exists at every level of manifestation. At the atomic level we find vibrations within the atom as electrons orbit the nucleus. Light comes to us in the form of vibrations, as does sound. As the vibrational rate increases, the object or thing changes.

The Principle of Vibration states that the different rates of vibration create all of the different manifestations in the universe. It also states that the differences between things are based on varying rates of vibration. This is true not only of matter, but of thoughts, and of the realm of force as well. At every level, varying degrees of vibration. The principle also states that our evolution through various states is based upon the constant increase in our vibrational velocity. It is stated that gross forms of matter are at a low vibration. As the vibration is raised, the constitution of the matter changes. It mounts up a successive scale of hierarchy. From the mineral, to the vegetable, to animal, to human (higher animal form). Our minds contain the next level of vibration in the form of thoughts and bridge vibration to the next level: spirit. As the thought vibrations rise in velocity, the leave the thought realm and become spirit. Eventually, the spirit vibrations become so rapid that they merge with the vibration of the All and have returned to source.

In the process of perfecting the self, one’s vibration is raised and the individual therefore become closer to spirit and leaves the realm of matter (metaphorically speaking). In doing so, they become closer to spirit and the consciousness is raised to a new level.

The master of self can also change the state of the universe through the power of mental vibration. As the universe is mental in nature, changing one’s own mental vibration also changes the state of the universe.

With the concepts stated above, it becomes clear that the principle of vibration is not only extremely important to our modern scientific understanding, but equally important as a definition of the power of the self. Study this principle on detail and many pre-existing veils will begin to fall.

The Seven Hermetic Principles-The Principle of Mentalism

“The All is Mind, the universe is mental”. This quotation is used to sum up the concept in the Kybalion. It took me several years (and still working in it) to grasp this concept. What does this really mean?

The All that’s referred to in the Kybalion is the single entity (if it can be called an entity ) that creates and governs the material and spiritual universe. The All is considered to be made of purely spirit. The All contains everything that is; matter, spirit, the forces of nature.

The universe and everything in it is said to be a mental creation if the All. The All created the universe as a mental creation, since there are no materials outside of the All with which it could create with.

This concept seems confusing and improbable at first, however, science is gradually leaning toward this idea. Many in the scientific community are now saying that our universe is made up of Consciousness. Consciousness is a product of mind. Without it, would there be a reality? We have seen through scientific experimentation that the observer has an effect on the outcome of an experiment. This is purely a mental phenomenon.  Our understanding of our reality is based solely on the interpretation of our five senses by our minds. Since we interpret our reality through our senses, we are limited by our finite minds. The Kybalion tells us that the All is infinite mind, which a finite mind cannot grasp due to its limitations.

To the All, we are but a dream. To us, the material world is a reality. This idea may seem troubling at first, but think it through and let it sink in. Our minds maybe finite, but remember, we all contain the infinite within and our finite minds are connected to the infinite mind of the All. we are all made up of particles created by the All and are microcosmic representations of the All.

We as a species have not even began to tap into the true potential of our minds. Scientists claim that we only use 10% of our brains power. Imagine if we could unleash the other 90% of that power. If our finite minds have as much power as science says they do, imagine the power of infinite mind!

The Seven Hermetic Principles-Revisited

Long ago, I wrote a synopsis of the 7 Hermetic principles as laid out in the Kybalion.  At the time, the principles were new to me. I had a slight grasp on them, but had not studied them thoroughly. In the mean time, I have been studying them and feel it would behoove me and everyone else if I were to elaborate and correct my errors from the first time around. In the next 7 posts, I will cover each principle in detail as I now understand them. Hopefully this will shed some light on these supremely important principles that govern the natural and supernatural world. Stay tuned for my foray into the first principle. The Principle of Mentalism.

McKenna on Hermeticism

Scholar, Shaman, and Psychedelic-Mystic, Terrence McKenna explored many interesting avenues of psychology, anthropology, and ethnobotany. What many don’t know is that he also explored the esoteric. In this fascinating lecture, McKenna addresses the topic of Hermeticism among other things. He gives us his unique perspectives on this enigmatic tradition. Hope you enjoy!

The Structure of the Vacuum-Is this what Mystery Traditions were trying to teach us?

As science evolves and edges closer to the side of spirituality, it is becoming clear that all things are truly connected. This is what the ancient mystics were constantly saying in all of their allegorical writings. The concept of finding balance within ourselves and moving towards a “center point” are prevalent not only in the teachings of the East, but also in their more esoteric counterparts in the West. These concepts of a “center point” and “balance” are essential to understanding the nature of the universe.

So what is the thing that connects all things? Physicist Nassim Haramein may have discovered the answer to this age-old question. The thing that connects everything around us is space. It’s everywhere. It’s within matter and all around us. It is the common denominator in all things. His concept is that at the center of a proton is a black hole. This may be the point of singularity. Matter and space appear to move inward toward infinity. This “singularity”, or black hole concept is mirrored everywhere in the universe. At the center of every galaxy is a black hole. There may even be a giant black hole in the center of the universe itself. Everything outside of the black hole is space. There is abundantly more space than matter everywhere in the universe. Space is within matter itself, for that matter. Various scientists have discovered that this so-called emptiness of space may be the exact opposite of empty. Calculations by various scientists, Haramein included, show that the space is infinitely full of energy, much more full than matter is. Perhaps our current paradigm is about to be turned on it’s head. Space may be the thing that we are all missing the point on. Since space is dense and infinitely full, it eclipses matter in it’s grandness. Even though we think of space as nothingness, it is the exact opposite. We just cannot see it’s contents with the naked eye and therefore we deem it as unimportant. This so-called empty space seems to have a distinct geometric pattern. Haramein believes that he may have discovered the structure of this space, or vacuum. Generated by the tetrahedron (the most simplistic, but yet most structurally sound Platonic solid) in a polarized spin, (creating an inverted, second tetrahedron) we have the first building block of this space. These polarized tetrahedron combinations called “star tetrahedrons”, consist of an upward facing and a downward facing tetrahedron that are interlocked together creating symmetry and balance. This is the perfect balanced geometry necessary to create a sphere. The balance created by this geometry is in complete equilibrium in e every aspect.

It is here, that the ancient mysteries start to come into the play in this equation. The shape that is created by the interlocked, polarized, spinning Star Tetrahedrons when looked at in two dimensions, is a hexagram or six pointed star. This symbol is one of the most ancient mystical symbols that we have. We find it represented as the Seal of Solomon and the Star of David in the Hebrew tradition. It is used in the Hermetic teachings. We find it used in various occult traditions as well. It is shown to represent the concept of Heaven and Earth (the triangle pointing toward Heaven, the other pointing down toward Earth). This symbol most often is meant to represent balance of differing polarities. It is used to represent the Divine Masculine and Sacred Feminine (the upward pointing triangle, phallic-like, the downward pointing triangle, vaginal in nature).

If looked at 3 dimensionly, with the upward pointing triangle and downward pointing triangle rotating on one another, we find another interesting symbol. What we have is what early Jewish Mysticism called the Merkabah. Merkabah, which means “chariot” is often depicted as the transporter of the soul from one world to another. It could be looked at as the transportation vehicle between the physical and spiritual realms. This Merkabah, is sometimes depicted as a wheel or chariot, but in most instances, is depicted as two interlocked tetrahedrons that are rotating. A Merkabah field is thought to exist around our bodies and is laying dormant and ready to be activated to elevate our consciousness, and to transport us to higher heights.

Being that we see this hexagram everywhere in various religious traditions from all over the world. This cannot be a coincidence. Furthermore, Haramein states that an assembly of these Star Tetrahedrons forms what he refers to as the 64 Tetrahedron Grid, which he claims is true structure of the vacuum. This geometric array includes completely equal vectors in it’s construction and is complete symmetrical. This geometry is not only complete in it’s equilibrium, but when constructed of the 64 interlocked upright and downward facing tetrahedrons matches up perfectly with another ancient symbol. This symbol is called the Flower of Life and again is seen depicted in various ancient religious imagery from around the world. We see this image in Asian sculpture. It is in Ancient Egyptian art as well. This 64 Tetrahedron grid lines up perfectly!

Since we see so many of these examples of the depiction of the structure of the vacuum and creation through time in our religious traditions and in the ancient mystery schools, it simply cannot be a coincidence. These ancient teachings were showing us the fundamental pattern needed to understand the building blocks of our universe. These patterns have been largely ignored by modern religion and education. It is time for us to go out into this big universe and connect the dots; or tetrahedrons, in this case to see what the mysteries have been showing those with “eyes” to see since time immemorial.
